Every day, we want to better the lives of people all around us: from the individuals and families in our Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake Tribe and county; to the communities where we live and work to the natural environment on which we all depend.

These aspirations stem from the belief that we live in a world where our futures are inextricably linked. None of us can exist without the support and care of others, and keeping this in balance has been a primary goal of our people and our Tribe.

The long-term success of Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake is intrinsically connected to the prosperity of the greater society in which we live and work. This is why our purpose is to touch and improve the lives of others and contribute to a brighter future. The positive impact we strive to make on society focuses on enabling better and happier lives for individuals and families, partnering on the development of thriving and resilient communities and, lastly, on stewarding the earth’s natural resources for future generations so that these ideals continue on.

The Pomo of Upper Lake people have always known the importance of a strong connection to others and the land, so it is with great devotion that we continue these sentiments of shared values. Our ultimate goal is to give back to today’s population and the generations yet to come with a set of principles to guide our future.

This strong foundation is, as we see it, the key to continuing harmony with other Tribes and the greater community around us. By building bridges between our community and others, we preserve the long legacy of our Tribe and ensure that our values will outlive us all. Our vision for Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake includes preserving and maintaining our cultural traditions, and sharing aspects of our past with the current generation. When we build on our roots, we can grow ever upward.

As I approach nearly a decade as Chairperson, I look around at the community and am in awe of the spirit and shared dedication visible in our Tribe. By remembering our history with an eye to the future, we can continue on our path of harmony with our neighbors and friends in the Lake County region. It’s a goal that every member of the Tribe can take pride in.
